Child Defenders for June and July 2007 named Print E-mail

The National Law Center is proud to name its Child Defenders of the Month for June and July, 2007. The recipients are:

June - The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Raleigh, NC

July - The Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Salt Lake City, UT

The June Child Defender of the Month has a long successful history of defending children in North Carolina. The State Bureau of Investigation Computer Crimes Investigation Unit is lead by Special Agent in Charge, Kevin West. These dedicated law enforcement officers assist local law enforcement in the investigation of computer crimes which involve children. Some of their recent cases include a conviction of one individual of 16 counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor and a multi-jurisdictional case with officers in Virginia of an individual who disseminated live internet video of himself to what he thought was a 12-year-old female child.

The July Child Defender of the Month is one of the most productive Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforces in the nation. The Utah ICAC proudly claims that it has the highest rate of internet predator arrests per capita in the nation. The Task Force, led by Chief Ken Wallentine, has excellent officers including a State Employee of the Year in its ranks.  For a news article on this presentation, click here  and at these sites:

Florida law enforcement pursues on-line predators

Florida law enforcement officials announced the results from their five month operations targeting on-line predators. The law enforcement efforts spanned 28 of Florida's 67 counties and resulted in 126 arrests.

“The importance of presenting a united front against cyber criminals, when we are trying to protect our children, can not be over emphasized,” said Attorney General Bill McCollum.  “Internet  predators  know  no geographical  boundaries,  and  we  must  fully cooperate to effectively cover  our  state  with  our  protective  efforts.  This operation has achieved phenomenal results and my office will soon have 50 additional staff members in the CyberCrime Unit to assist in these endeavors.”
